Marshall Amplification is a British company that designs and manufactures music amplifiers , speaker cabinets , brands personal headphones and earphones, [2] and, having acquired Natal Drums , drums and bongos. It was founded by drum shop owner and drummer Jim Marshall , and is now based in Bletchley , Milton Keynes , Buckinghamshire. Marshall’s guitar amplifiers are among the most recognised in the world. Their signature sound, characterized by sizzling distortion and “crunch,” was conceived by Marshall after guitarists, such as Pete Townshend , visited Marshall’s drum shop complaining that the guitar amplifiers then on the market didn’t have the right sound or enough volume. Marshall also manufactures less expensive solid-state, hybrid vacuum tube and solid state and modelling amplifiers. After a successful career as a drummer and teacher of drum technique, Jim Marshall first went into business in with a small shop in Hanwell , London, selling drums, cymbals and drum-related accessories; Marshall himself also gave drum lessons.

Does any one have this book “Hal Leonard The History of Marshall” or know of an online resource to help date this speaker cabinet?
Speakers are extremely important when we are talking about tone. So, what should I get to achieve the tone I want? This article will be a maybe not so small post about the history of Celestion, as well as a brief description of each model they produced over the years. Celestion started as a manufacturer of speakers for general use radio, TV, etc. In , it was bought by British Rola and, one year later, production moved to Thames Ditton. It was used in Vox and early Marshall amps.
It was also bright, lively and had a more restrained bottom end. G12M Greenback. But I will explain everything in details shortly. Early 20w G12M 25w 75hz. Celestion first introduced the G12M medium 35oz ceramic magnet around with a power handling of 20w , with options of 8ohms or 15ohms and a resonance frequency of 55hz bass cone or 75hz lead cone.

The vintage gear market can be a daunting place, with seemingly lots of dis-honest sellers out there looking to rip people off. In this blog post I will be going over a few basic pointers for identifying fake vintage gear from the Marshall plexi era. Hopefully this will prevent a few people from getting stung. The most collectable vintage Marshall gear is basically anything from day 1 supposedly to the end of the basketweave period mid Generally speaking, the older they are, the more collectable and valuable they are.
In particular, be very wary of anything from the pinstripe period; circa to early Amps such as the Marshall plexi 18w combos and bluesbreaker combos are an absolute favourite for fraud due to the high sale prices they can bring. The best way to identify fake vintage Marshall plexi gear is to look very closely at the various parts.
Warning — the rest of this blog post is going to get very nerdy, so leave now if this is likely to bore you! There are a couple of known reproduction pinstripe grill materials around, but they can be difficult to differentiate without seeing them very close up. This is one of the reasons why some online dealers only take blurry or distant photos of their gear! A more obvious reproduction material exists, apparently manufactured in China.

Marshall amplifiers made hard rock possible. While Fender and Vox amps have their place in moving electrified guitar forward, the creations of Jim Marshall fostered an entirely new sound and allowed guitarists to fill stadiums with it. Marshall amps had such precedent-setting wattage and tone that their history can hardly be separated from the history of rock itself. We recently wrote an article detailing that rich history which you can read here , but for those simply looking to figure out how old their Marshall amp is, we offer this shortcut.
The guide below will help you quickly and clearly date Marshall amps and cabinets, without us waxing poetic about their influence. The best approach is to cross-reference the serial number with known features for the model during different eras and the personal account of previous owners. Getting the correct year is one thing, but getting the story behind an amp is the fun part.
The guide for that is much simpler: be nice, ask questions, offer beer. If you have absolutely no idea whether your Marshall is old or new, a good place to start is the model name or series. This will give you an approximate idea of the era during which your amp was manufactured. It’s also one more piece of evidence to pair with the serial number to corroborate the actual year. The first Marshall amps were made in England starting in Production has continued there uninterrupted through today, though some lower-priced models are now made in China, India or Korea, depending on the series.
Some amps won’t fit into these series like the recent Class 5 Combo or various signature and limited edition models , so using the serial number will be your best bet to hone in on a specific date of manufacture.

Guitars, Gear, Tone! Marshall AX 4×12 cab question Re: Marshall AX 4×12 cab question Hard to tell by the serial no on the cab, but if you can get the ” T ” number off the celestion frame, we could probably tell by those numbers. They started production of those in , so thats a pretty broad spread. They came with 25 watt Celestion ” classic ” spkrs, that were actually greenbacks.
The number sequence that dates the heads is different from the cabs.
